Better late than never they say! Sorry for the long delay between blogs, it’s been a busy time!
2 weekends ago it was the 10th anniversarry National Drum Fair in Birmingham UK. This was an opportunity for all vintage drum enthusiasts in the UK to gather and drool over the best vintage drums the uk had to offer, as well as stock up on spares for restoration projects and basically hang out and talk drums.I was fortunate enough to be joined by Les Brown from Champion Drums and Diesel Forster to help out on my stall, so managed to have a quick scout around at some of the vintage lovelies a few times.
This year so a beautiful display of Trixon Drum sets, arranged by friends Ingo and Martin, who run the Trixon website and arrange vintage drum meetings in Europe. The collection of kits were supplied by Dave Prince of the UK, and it was great to meet up with the 3 of them after talking online for some time.
Mark from Rusty Drums had an amazing selection of some twenty plus kits and 50 odd snares (Gretsch, Sligerland, Ludwig, Leedy) ; again it was great to finally meet up in the flesh. It was great to catch up with other online friends – Matt Nolan Cymbals; Alex at Amedia Cymbals; Premier nuts Mike Ellis, Tam Rankin , Jeremy Peake, Dug McLeod and Les Brown;
The staff at Rhythm magazine were supportive as ever, taking pictures of some of the lovely kits that people brought along to display. Winnie from Hidehitters had a great selection of vintage drum books as well as some very early hi hat stands and ‘snow shoes’.
I met up with loads of drummers from all over the country who were there for a good browse; most had a whirl around my early 70’s Premier kit re-wrapped in silver , including Simon Dawson (British Lion) and Young Drummer of the Year, Calum Blair. Calum did his thing on the performance stage and it’s clear why he won. Phenomenal. Local drummer Karl Brazil even took the time to show up on his only day off from rehearsals with Robbie Williams to have a good sniff at some vintage goodies.
I’ve probably missed lots of people out. I had a great time talking drums for 3 days and will see you all there next year. In the meantime, i’ve got some new stock in so be sure to check my website regularly – www.nickhopkindrums.com – for kits, snares and accessories.
